Chelsea ‘has made an initial bid of £33million for Barcelona misfit Frenkie de Jong,’ according to reports, although they will face stiff competition from Bayern Munich for his services.

De Jong, a midfielder from the Netherlands who joined Barcelona from Ajax in 2019, has been a significant disappointment since his arrival.

Despite the fact that the 24-year-old is a regular starter for Barcelona, he has struggled to live up to the high expectations placed on him as a £65 million deal.

Barcelona is willing to cut their losses, and a number of top-tier European clubs are interested in signing De Jong as a result.

The Spanish newspaper El Nacional claims that Chelsea has made an initial approach, but that it falls short of Barcelona’s £50 million valuation.

However, they point out that Barcelona may be willing to accept a lower price of £42 million, meaning that a minor rise in Chelsea’s asking price may be sufficient to capture De Jong.

Gavi, 17, and Nico Gonzalez, 20, have emerged as key players for manager Xavi, according to the newspaper, and De Jong may soon find himself out of position in the midfield.

Known admirer of De Jong, Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly requested the club to investigate whether a deal can be reached between the two parties.

Manchester City have also been connected with the Dutchman, who has appeared in 117 games for Barcelona and scored 10 goals and provided 14 assists in that time.
